spring is only a month away here in Sydney. It’s hard to believe when it’s still so cold here. People keep telling me it’s warmer than it was a couple of weeks ago, but I think we’re still spoilt by the tropical warmth of the Kimberley in northwest Australia.

We’re both looking forward to the warmer weather but until then I suppose we’ll just have to eat lots of food and look longingly at our photos from our recent trip. It works for us, so why not join in the fun?

Here’s what’s been keeping us going this week.

Today we’ve met up with the lovely Liz from iSpyPlumPie.com while she’s up in Sydney on her own food odyssey. We’ve come to Bar Luca in the city to have lunch. We’re all pretty happy with the choice – my cheeseburger’s very tasty and Liz’s chickpea burger burger looks good too. and the chips are way too moreish.

Flashback time! We’re reliving our flight over the Bungle Bungles in Australia’s northwest. Yes, it’s a small plane, but it’s a great way to see these unique sandstone rock features. It’s only a short flight from Kunanurra – over beautiful Lake Argyle – but it proved to be a long flight all the way back to Wyndham where our ship was moored.

These bizarre rocks were only discovered by the tourism industry or modern-day geologists in 1983. They’re known as the Bungle Bungles, but their real name is Purnululu and have been a sacred area to the local people here for around 40,000 years.

Their unusual striped beehive shapes were formed around 350 billion years ago when this area was an enormous river. The erosion from the water flow and – when the river dried up – from the wind and rain. The orange stripes are from layered deposits of iron oxide in the sandstone.

The rock all across the Kimberley are rich in iron. As it rusts, the iron in the rock turns this beautiful red colour. and the size of the cliffs in this part of the coast are just magnificent.

Back to the present, tonight Mrs romance is trying out Rosie Campbell’s – a new bar that’s opened in the place of the Bentley Bar in Surry Hills. It’s only a little place, and is more of a bistro bar than a speakeasy, but the Jamaican theme sits well here. Mrs romance recommends the sweet potato fries.

This morning, Mrs romance is helping out at the boys and girls Brigade childcare centre for their fundraising fete. She’s there in her Hair romance capacity, braiding hair to help raise money.

I popped in around lunchtime and have been rewarded with this most excellent haloumi burger from the Veggie patch Van that’s parked out the front. This bad boy’s got 2 huge slabs of haloumi, caramelised onion and beetroot. The red juice from the beetroot’s a bit of a challenge and not something you should try to eat when wearing white, but the burger’s so tasty.

Our parting gesture on Instagram this weekend is this. The beautiful, outstanding calm of the Indian ocean up by the Kimberley region. It was so flat this day, the naturalists crewing the Zodiac boats from the national geographic Orion didn’t even have to steer them or sit down.
